Quality of Life

The Quality of Life Technologies lab responsibly unleashed the power of data to benefit the quality of life of all individuals. The lab’s research interests revolve around the fundamental and algorithmic problems as well as human-centric challenges of the systems enabling an assessment and improvement of human behavior, well-being, health, disease self-management, and quality of life as it unfolds naturally over time and in context. The QoL Lab leverages personal, longitudinal, real-world data approaches (including, e.g., 'quantified-self' and N-of-1 designs) in Living Lab settings.

The key aim of the Quality of Life (QoL) technologies research area is to establish quality research in mobile networking systems delivering accurate and timely services to their users "anywhere-anytime-anyhow". The general approach is necessarily a transdisciplinary one, as many of the challenges in development and deployment phases of these systems need to be addressed considering not only the system and its Quality of Service (QoS) provided in an operational networking environment, but, as sometimes missing in the current research - the actual system end-users, approaching mobile networking not from the perspective of new hype technology, but from the perspective of new innovate ways to achieve some pre-defined goal. These end-users have thus different services'' requirements, expectations and perceptions of the Quality of Experience (QoE), including system's usability, efficiency and effectiveness. In transdisciplinary research projects, we aim to establish innovate methodologies to demonstrate the value of mobile networking systems improving the QoS, the QoE and ultimately the QoL outcomes of its end-users, and thus the social welfare.

The QoL team currently contributes to research on mobile networking systems deployed in healthcare (denoted as 'mHealth') and delivering solutions for personal wellbeing, active and healthy ageing and ambient assisted living by leveraging personal, big data approches (like 'quantified-self' one) in Living Lab settings. The QoL technologies research area has been established in 2010 by Dr KatarzynaWac and is a part of Institute of Services Science (ISS) and Center for Informatics (CUI) of University of Geneva (UniGe).
